Just as you would use an engineer's scale to determine a haul distance on a paper map, you can use a measure tool in GIS to complete the same task.
In this exercise, you will:
  • Use the "Measure" tool to get an estimate of the haul distance for the material.

    1. Left Click the “Measure” tool in the “Tools” toolbar

    2. Left Click the beginning site location

    3. Left Click points along a most likely path of travel until the final destination is reached

    4. The total distance traveled is equal to the “Total: ___ units” found in the lower left hand corner of the screen when the measure tool is placed over the final destination

    5. Press the escape key to stop measuring
