In this lab we will use a Geographic Information System (GIS) to explore crash (accident) data. The objective is to use GIS as a tool to learn the basics of crash data analysis for traffic safety. Crash data for the Arkansas Interstate highway system (shown below) will be used in this study. The data provided by the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department used for this project is sincerely acknowledged.
Scenario:
You are a traffic engineer for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department and would like to analyze the crash frequency and propose countermeasures to overcome these problems. You have access to a big set of crash data and have limited time to analyze it. You would like to use GIS to analyze this data. The following activity will guide you through this process.
