II. a. Contours

The ‘Contours’ layer shows the elevation at intervals of ten feet. We will use this as an overlay above other layers to view the terrain, but first we must make it transparent so that the layers below it can still be seen with ease.
In this exercise, you will:
- Set transparency for overlay on other layers and label

- Zoom to project area using the “Zoom In” tool in the “Tools” toolbar
- Right Click “Contours” layer → Properties → Display tab.
- Type “50” in “Transparent” box
- Right click “Contours” layer → Properties → Labels tab
- In “Text Field” box, select the “Label Field” drop down menu
- Select “Elev_FT”
- Select “Placement Properties” button
- Check “On the Line” and uncheck “Above”
- Check “Parallel” box
- Select “Apply” → OK
